My favourite places were the Mayan ruins, where you can also see loads of iguanas basking in the sun, and the stunning beach below. Many beaches have been commandeered by expensive resorts but a cool and beautiful spot, which is free, is the beach at Euphoria beach club. You can buy drinks there but don't have to, though it has a good happy hour and it's a great spot to meet other travellers. It is not easy getting back to downtown Tulum though from the hotel zone as the cheap public transport (collectivos) prioritises locals. I managed to get a taxi back to downtown for 100 pesos - most of the taxi drivers ask for 300 but some will haggle.
We seriously lucked out with our stay here. From the moment we pulled up to the quiet location and sea breeze we were over the moon with the place and it only for better from there. The accommodation is spacious, clean and well equipped. Julian was a super host and made sure we were happy throughout our stay. Antal has friendly, helpful staff full time that even brought us fresh coconuts our first day. There are kayaks and paddle boards available for use and loads of fun games in the communal area. We spent a few blissful days just at the salt water pool enjoying the views. I cannot recommend this place enough and we will be back! The one detail I would add is you really need a car to make the most of the area.
Tulum was well worth the visit and would certainly visit again if we could afford to but having ZAR at 19:1 to US$ makes it extremely expensive for non-Americans or Europeans. Taxi fees are exorbitant as they have a complete monopoly there so would advise renting a car or scooter. We ate at The Sexy Pizza - really good food and atmosphere; we visited Yal-Ku for snorkelling - excellent and the Four Cenotes - great choices. Definitely recommend Tulum as it still has the small town vibe with plenty to do and is not nearly as commercial as Cancun.
Tulum is a vibe. Great place to visit and explore. You can find cute little quaint restaurants. Or explore in nature. Every neighborhood has something different so great to change and learn about different neighborhoods. Can rent bikes and explore to beach. Scooters are popular. Taxi's are very overpriced so plan for other means of transportation which is bike or scooter or walking. If you stay by downtown area is more walkable.
The centre of Tulum was a long way from the beach, quite empty & didn’t have the laid back traveller vibes I was hoping for. The beach was unusable due to the sargassum sea weed so was empty during the day but the restaurants there were fun at night.
the americans have made this an overpriced destination. The prices for food and drinks is the same as Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Most people just want to come and party and do drugs......its wayyyyyyy over rated and it smells.
