It was an experience to stay in a historical home.
We slept in the two rooms downstairs. Upstairs and some other rooms seem to be used as storage but you can look around most of it, it’s huge. Toilets and laundry/vanity are updated, the bathroom is dated but fine to use. If you are passing through or walking the Nakasendo it’s a good option. Easy walk from the train station. Dining options are limited but there is a huge supermarket, drug store, and 7-11 in easy walking distance. We went to the Chinese restaurant which was passable but wouldn’t repeat. The temple is just a short walk away, we didn’t go in but the garden is nice.
Hotel Fuki no Mori is a 20-minute ride from JR Nagiso Train Station on the hotel’s free shuttle. Guests can enjoy walks at the garden or the scenic areas surrounding the hotel.

This accomodation was the perfect home base to walk the Nakasendo. The accomodation was very nice and beautifully furnished. We had a lot of space for our luggage and also a parking lot in front of the house is provided. The communication with the host and all the organisation worked perfectly. The host was super friendly and very helpful, even when we had some additional requests. Thanks so much for all the help! The rooms were veeery spacious (converted classrooms). The shared toilet & shower facilities were also very clean and nice—overall the building interior felt very new.

It was a wonderful experience living in a property that’s about 150 years old. We had the whole property to ourselves, and the facilities provided such as the kitchen and provision of coffee was great. The owner was kind to give us a tour of the property as well.

Had the most delightful stay at this property. The house was cosy and had the feeling of being in a real home, and the owners were so lovely. They really went above and beyond to make sure our stay went smoothly, picking us up and dropping us off to the station, giving us tips on cool places to go, and she even brought us coffees in the morning and packed us the most delicious sandwiches for our hike. We ate them by the river and it really made our day. 10/10

Suhara (Okuwa) is a lovely small town on the Nakasendo on the Kiso river. It's in Nagano prefecture. There are some lovely houses. Trains are reliable but infrequent so plan carefully if travelling by train. Make sure you don't go to the town of the same name, on the same river, in Gifu prefecture as we did. Super place if you love peace, quiet and walking / hiking
